The better leader you are, the better leaders you will attract.
John Maxwell

Such a strong statement. But think about it for a minute. People with like values are attracted to each other.
People with a good work ethic like to be around others with a good work ethic.
Those who have a poor work ethic like to be around others with a poor work ethic.
Those who are driven for success, like to be around others who are driven for success.
I observed this principle in action many times. One instance I observed over a period of a few months. I frequented a fast-food restaurant on a weekly basis. They struggled on a regular basis. Mediocre service with a lackluster staff.
They changed out General Managers. Over the next couple months I saw a definite upturn in service and cleanliness of the store. What I noticed is the mediocre workers had been replaced by people who had a better attitude toward service. All of this was due to the new General Manager. Their attitude and actions toward the customer was so much different than the previous GM. With this new attitude, they expected a better attitude from their people and they attracted people who could provide this type of service.
On the reverse side of this, I once worked with a department at corporate who everyone there seemed to be in a dark cloud. They never seemed to be very positive and appeared as if they hated being there. The department was led by someone who seemed to generate the dark cloud!
If likeness attracts, then we as leaders need to display the right qualities to attract people with the qualities we want on our team.
I like how Maxwell says to write out the qualities you desire, then do a self-assessment. From here, we can do a self-assessment to determine if we actually have the qualities that we want others to have. Of course, if there are areas we need to improve, then we develop the qualities in ourselves.
The better leader we are, the better leaders we will attract.
I am working with a group on developing their leadership skills. One of the activities I am having them do is to read through and provide their insights to each chapter of the book 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. This series of post provides the basic summary of each of the Laws along with my thoughts.
