Law 4 – Law of Navigation

21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

This law is about the importance for a leader to plan ahead, remain focused and control the direction of the trip. About having strategic action, to achieve our visions.

Charting the course. I have always heard and repeated, “if you don’t know where you are going, how will you know if you get there?”

As leaders of organizations, no matter the size, we need to have a clear goal of where we want to go.  We need to have that Vision of what to accomplish, and have goals, strategies and tactics that support the vision and will help us reach the vision.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish”

Proverbs 29:18

Start with the vision. I liked how Maxwell shared his experience of having a vision of a building project, then he thought about what he needed to make it happen. He spoke about how to rally the people to support him and how he strategically gained support from specific leaders. All before the project even began. He was being strategic and laying the groundwork.

Being a leader is not just putting a vision out there but navigating how to achieve the vision.

I have asked many people I coach “what do you want?” They are usually very general, but then I keep digging to try to get specific things they want or want to accomplish.

  • If you want a certain number of clients by XX time.
  • Sales to be at a certain level by XX time.
  • Complete a project by a certain time.

Start with a Vision!

Once you have a vision, be strategic on how you will get to that vision. Put a plan together with goals, strategies, and tasks.

Once you do this you will find a couple of things will happen.

  • You now have a laid out plan that you can follow
  • You have it in writing to hold yourself accountable

How are you navigating to accomplish this vision?  Are you working the plan?

Be strategic. Don’t just “see what happens”.  Make it happen. Be the navigator.

I am working with a group on developing their leadership skills. One of the activities I am having them do is to read through and provide their insights to each chapter of the book 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. This series of post provides the basic summary of each of the Laws along with my thoughts.
